What it is

One mod, your rules

MidgardPlus is one mod with 1,083 settings for Valheim: companions with jobs, Jarl legendary weapons, replay bosses, raids and sieges, the Saga Book, farming, storage, slots, archery, mounts, portals, ships and admin tools.

It speaks English, Russian, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese and follows the language Valheim is set to. The launcher and this website pick your language too.

The golden rule. Every one of the 1,083 settings starts at vanilla or off. Install it and nothing changes. Nothing changes until you switch it on, in the launcher, in the F9 panel or in midgardplus.cfg. Settings that arrive with an update start off too, so an update never changes your world under you.

And where another mod you run already does a job, the matching part of MidgardPlus steps aside by itself, says so once in the log and keeps your setting saved. That is Step aside for other mods, on by default; Never step aside for keeps a job with MidgardPlus anyway.

Step 1

Install it

Three ways. The launcher is the one I recommend: it finds your Valheim folder, installs BepInEx, Jotunn and MidgardPlus, and gives every setting a proper control instead of a text file.

The launcher for Windows, recommended

Download the launcher
  1. Download MidgardPlusLauncher.exe with the button above and run it. Windows calls it an unknown publisher because it is not code-signed. Choose More info, then Run anyway. If you would rather check the file first, every download is listed in SHA256SUMS.txt.

  2. The launcher finds your Valheim folder on its own. If it does not, pick your game folder on its Home page.

  3. Press Install MidgardPlus. It puts BepInEx, Jotunn and the newest MidgardPlus from Thunderstore in place, and backs up your config before it writes.

  4. Press Play. The first start writes the settings file with everything at vanilla.Valheim\BepInEx\config\midgardplus.cfg

From version 1.2.4 the launcher keeps itself up to date: when a new one is out, a gold Update launcher button appears at the top of the window. One click downloads it, checks it against the published checksum and restarts. If your title bar shows no version number after “MidgardPlus Launcher”, download it once more with the button above.

or one line in PowerShell
irm https://midgardplus.odinthered.dev/install.ps1 | iex

Paste that into PowerShell. It finds your Valheim folder on its own, installs BepInEx, Jotunn and MidgardPlus, and stops there. It needs no admin rights and only writes inside your Valheim folder. Read the script first if you would rather see exactly what it does.

or use a mod manager
MidgardPlus on Thunderstore Install by hand

Works with r2modman, Thunderstore Mod Manager and Gale. Open the Thunderstore page and press Install with Mod Manager. The manager pulls BepInEx and Jotunn in for you and keeps the mod updated. The steps for installing by hand are on the home page under Install.

Installs BepInEx for you Installs Jotunn for you On Thunderstore Launcher for Windows

To remove it later, delete the MidgardPlus folder under BepInEx\plugins. Nothing the game ships gets modified, so there is nothing else to undo. The launcher has Remove MidgardPlus from this game under Help and tools, which takes BepInEx out as well and copies your settings to a backup folder first.

Step 2

Your first session

Open the launcher, decide what you want, press Play. The game explains the rest from the inside.

  1. Open the launcher. Three doors lead to your settings. Set me up asks six questions and sets the game up the way you describe. Quick setups are presets from Odin that change only the settings they name. Game settings lists all 1,083 with a search box at the top left, where you type what you want to change in your own words. Nothing is written until you press Save.

  2. Or switch features on one at a time. Every big part has its own switch under 0 - Features: Companions, Companion jobs, Saga Book, Tiered portals, Mounts, Plant anything and more. Turn one on and only that part joins your game.

  3. Press Play. In the game, F9 opens the MidgardPlus panel. That is Admin panel key under 1 - Quality of Life: in single player you are the admin, on a server it is the host or the server's admins. Its Settings tab holds every setting with its explanation, and a change applies while the game runs. Its Guide tab explains every feature that is on. Everyone else gets the leaderboard on F8, the Leaderboard key.

  4. Let the game teach you. Show the guide hint on join shows one line the first time you spawn each session: how many extra features are on and which key opens the Guide. Show feature hints gives a one line tip the first time you use something MidgardPlus changed. Both sit under 1 - Quality of Life and both start off.

Good first things to try

Each one is a single switch, named below exactly as it appears in the settings. Try one at a time and keep what you like.

Quick stack and restock

Turn on Storage buttons under 9 - Crafting and inventory for Sort, Stack, Restock and Trash buttons above your bag, and Store all beside a chest you open. Or bind Quick-stack key and Restock key in the same group; both start empty.

Auto map pins

Auto map pins under 1 - Quality of Life pins things worth coming back for as you walk past them. Pick the kinds with Auto pin berry bushes, Auto pin mushrooms, Auto pin dungeons and caves, Auto pin portals and the rest.

The Saga Book

Saga Book under 0 - Features, then press J, the Saga Book key: creatures slain land by land, finds, lands walked, the bosses and their tales, deeds with rewards, and bounties.

Companions with jobs

Companions under 0 - Features. Craft a Companion Horn, Gatherer's Horn, Builder's Horn or Gardener's Horn at the workbench and blow it. Add Companion jobs, have one follow you, crouch at a Garden sign or a kitchen and press Use, and it takes the work there.

The planting guide

Planting guide under 1 - Quality of Life. Hold the cultivator with a crop, sapling or bush picked and a ring on the ground shows the room it needs: green where it will grow, red where it would be stunted or never grow.

Seasons

Seasons under 6 - World: spring, summer, autumn and winter, counted from the world's own day, so everyone on the server sees the same season. Each change has its own switch, like Seasons change the weather and Seasons turn the trees. Show season on the HUD puts it on screen.

Step 3

Playing on a server

The host’s world, the host’s rules

Join a server and it hands you its settings. They override yours while you are connected, and you get yours back when you leave.

Server and players need matching versions. Everyone has to update together only when the middle number changes, like 1.6 to 1.7, and the changelog says so at the top when it happens. Patches like 1.7.1 and 1.7.2 play with 1.7.0.

Everyone needs the mod, the dedicated server included. The server writes its own BepInEx/config/midgardplus.cfg the first time it starts, and that file is the one that counts. Edit it while people are playing and the change reaches everyone within a second or two.

How the launcher helps

Joining a server

On the Join a server page. A host exports a server pack, the mods, their versions and the MidgardPlus settings, and shares the link. Paste it and the launcher installs what you are missing at the exact versions, then Join starts Valheim on that address.

Hosting on a rented server

On the My server page, press Install to a rented server and paste the SFTP or FTP details from your host's panel. It puts BepInEx, Jotunn and MidgardPlus in the right places and keeps what is already there. Set the server's settings under Game settings, press Save, then Send my settings.

Hosting on this PC

Choose the server folder in the launcher and press Install. Afterwards, Export a server pack and share the link, so your friends install the same mods at the same versions in one paste.

A night on a vanilla server

Play without mods, next to Play, starts Valheim once with mods off. A server without MidgardPlus turns a modded client away, so this is the door to it. Mods come back on when you close the game.

Add-ons

Megin

Megin is the first add-on, its own download made for MidgardPlus. In Ýdalir, the yew-dale hall of Ullr's hunters, you face the elders' trials, awaken your megin, the inner might the old poems give to gods and heroes, and build powers of your own, bound with oaths that make them stronger.

Open the launcher, go to Midgard add-ons and press Install. Everything in it starts off until you turn on The Lodge in its settings, and the server and every player need the same version. Removing an add-on keeps its settings file.

Updates

Patch days and the dev channel

Patch days are Wednesday night and Sunday night. That is when a new version goes to Thunderstore and Hexium, and when the launcher updates. Nothing lands in between, unless something crashes the game: a crash fix goes out the day it is ready. The launcher updates itself and tells you when a new MidgardPlus is out.

Want fixes sooner? The dev channel

Dev builds come out whenever something is finished, sometimes several a week. They are what the next patch day will be made of, so they are newer and less settled than the stable version.

  1. Open #dev-builds on the MidgardPlus Discord. Ask for the Dev role if you cannot see it. The dev key is pinned there.

  2. In the launcher, go to Help and tools, Update channel, press Dev and paste the key. The key stays on your PC, encrypted for your Windows account, and is never written to a log.

  3. Press Update when the launcher offers a dev build.

Worth knowing

The website

Find your way around

The home page is one long hall. These are its rooms, each a link.

The Nine Realms

Everything in MidgardPlus, laid out as nine realms on one tree. Each realm is a group of features: click a stone on Yggdrasil and walk through it, or search all of them from one box.

The armoury

The Jarl legendary weapons, each turned in 3D from the model the game puts in your hands, with its powers and stats. Jarl weapons and From the Forge go deeper.

The bosses

Mosskin, Vordr of the Reeds, the Gravejarl and the Red One: how to call each one and what happens at every stage.

Megin

The first add-on: the path, the affinities, the tiers, the oaths and how to get it.

Settings

The ledger: a few settings from each group with their defaults, so you see how the config file is organised.

Install

Every way to install, including by hand, and updating the launcher.

Devlog and roadmap

What each version changed, newest first, and what is being built next. The release schedule sits between them.

FAQ, feedback and your saga

Questions people ask, a form for bugs and ideas that lands in the Discord, and a wall for screenshots, builds and clips from players' worlds.

Help

When something goes wrong

  1. Read the FAQ first. It holds the questions that come up again and again, answered properly.

  2. Report a bug on Discord, in #help-and-bugs, with three things: what you did, your log dragged into the message as a file, and whether you were hosting or joining. Say which version you were on, dev builds included.Valheim\BepInEx\LogOutput.log

  3. The launcher makes the log safe to share. Under Help and tools, Send my log zips LogOutput.log with your Windows name, Steam IDs and IP addresses taken out, shows you every line, and saves it. Drag that zip in instead.

  4. Or use the form on the home page. Everything sent there lands in the same Discord.

Or just come and say it

If you want an actual conversation, or help getting it installed, Discord is the faster door. The dev key and the patch day announcements live there too.
