Tames guide

Tames

What each tame eats, and what you can ride.

Wolves, boars, lox and asksvin, bears and seeker soldiers, drakes and valkyries. The name in brackets is the setting to ask your admin for.

Taming, the basics

  • Taming: drop food the animal likes where it can reach it, stay out of its way and wait. It only tames while it is fed and calm.
  • Watch it: a label over the animal shows how far along it is and whether it is fed, from up to 40 m away.Setting: Show taming progress
  • Quicker: throw a taming rope from the workbench on it. It stands still, calms down and jumps 15% closer to tame.Setting: Taming ropes
  • More kinds: the game tames wolves, boars, lox, asksvin and hens. Tame any creature adds bears, seeker soldiers, drakes, voltures, fallen valkyries and big beasts from other mods.Setting: Tame any creature
  • Never tame: bosses, villagers, companions, faction and arena fighters, babies, and walking folk like trolls, greydwarfs and draugr.
  • On a server the admin decides what is on. Ask for the setting in brackets.

What each tame eats and rides

Drop any of these to tame it, and the same keeps it fed. The last column is what to switch on in F9, Game settings.

Saddles and riding

  • Saddle up: craft the saddle, use it on your tame, then look at the saddle and press E to climb on. E gets you off again.Setting: Mounts
  • Upgrade: wolf and boar saddles go up to quality 4 at the workbench, a bit faster and longer winded each time.
  • Riding levels: a mount gets better as you ride it, up to level 5, and a saddled wolf or boar grows bigger with it. Give it wide doors.Setting: Mount size, Mount growth with level
  • Jump and bite: wolves, boars and asksvin jump. On a wolf or boar, attacking makes it bite where you look.
  • Fight from the saddle: swing your own weapon or draw your bow while you ride, on any mount.Setting: Fight from the saddle
  • Carry more: you carry more while you ride, and riding with a heavy bag raises Packhorse. A fed mount gets its breath back much faster.
  • Whistle: press U and every mount you last rode within 150 m comes running.
  • Bigger beasts: any tame at least the size of a boar takes a boar saddle, bears and seeker soldiers too.Setting: Ride any tame big enough

Flyers

  • Flying tames: drakes, voltures and fallen valkyries can be tamed like a wolf. Feed them, keep them calm and wait.Setting: Tame any creature
  • Riding them: not yet. A flyer fights at your side but none of them carries you. Flying mounts are on the roadmap.
  • Bring them along: with All tames can follow on, press E on a flyer and it follows you.Setting: All tames can follow
  • Big flyers from other mods count too.

Follow, lead and portals

  • Follow: wolves follow when you press E. With All tames can follow on, boars, lox, hens and the rest do too, and crouch with E pets them.Setting: All tames can follow
  • Lead them all: press Left Alt + H and every tame around you follows. Press it again and they all stay.Setting: Lead tames radius
  • Portals: tames that follow you come through portals with you.Setting: Tames follow through portals
  • Names: Left Shift + E gives a tame a name.

Taming ropes

  • Taming rope: two at a time at the workbench from leather scraps and resin. Throw it on a wild animal you can tame from up to 6 m.Setting: Taming ropes
  • Stronger ropes: the strong rope from the forge tames twice as fast, the runic rope four times as fast and keeps the animal calm.Setting: Taming rope tiers
  • Gleipnir: forged at the black forge, it tames the animal on the spot and is used up.Setting: Taming rope tiers

Packs

  • Pet pack: make one at the workbench from leather scraps, deer hide and resin and use it on a tamed wolf, boar, lox or asksvin.Setting: Pet packs
  • Room: 8 slots on a wolf or boar, 10 on an asksvin and 18 on a lox. Look at a crate and press E to open it.
  • Nothing lost: the pack goes wherever the animal goes, and if it dies everything floats up in a crate beside it.

Skills, traits and bloodlines

  • Skills: every tame grows Vitality, Strength, Swiftness, Endurance and Toughness as you ride it, fight beside it, feed it and pet it.Setting: Tame skills
  • Tame window: look at a tame and press Left Alt + T. It shows the animal turning, its skills as bars, its traits, generation, health, hunger and breeding.
  • Babies: they take after both parents, so a good bloodline gets better every generation.Setting: Tame skills pass to offspring
  • Traits: now and then a baby is born Swift, Tough, Tireless or Mighty, and passes it down.Setting: Tame trait mutations
  • Breeding: wolves, boars, lox, asksvin and hens breed when two are fed and close together. Beasts from Tame any creature don't breed.Setting: Show breeding status

Feeding and keeping them

  • Pantry: a hungry tame takes its food from a chest close by, so one full chest feeds the whole pen.Setting: Tames eat from nearby chests
  • Away from home: a pen keeps taming and breeding while you are out exploring.Setting: Tames live on while you are away
  • Safe: tames can be knocked down to 1 health, but only the butcher knife kills them.Setting: Tames only die to the butcher knife
  • Faster: your admin can make taming and breeding quicker.Setting: Taming time multiplier, Breeding times
